My grandpa just gave me a giant bag of specialty pecans, and so I have been looking for recipes of things that I can cook. I really like the idea of making a southern pecan praline cake, because the picture that you have above looks absolutely delicious! However, I think that I might substitute the pralines for almonds.

FAQs

When to put pecans on top of pie? ›

You may also choose to reserve a cup of the whole pecans to lightly place on the top of the filling just before the pie goes into the oven.

What flavor compliments pecan? ›

Rich and buttery pecans add crunch and depth of flavor to many dishes. They pair wonderfully with our favorite autumnal flavors—like maple syrup, bourbon, chocolate, and even sweet potatoes—and are the perfect snack regardless of whether they're raw or toasted.

Why is my pecan pie hard on top? ›

Pecan pie can become hard if it is left in the oven for too long or at a higher temperature than necessary. This could happen due to an inaccurate cooking time, temperature or failing to cover with aluminum foil for part of the baking time.

How long to cool pecan pie before eating? ›

The filling continues to cook and will fully set as the pie cools, so giving a pie plenty of time at room temperature before serving is important. "We usually let our pecan pies sit out for about an hour," says Chef Kolle, "until the filling's cool enough to touch."

Why do you soak pecans before roasting? ›

Wet pecans allow the salt to stick easily to the nuts. Plus, soaking nuts helps neutralize enzyme inhibitors, which can harm your digestion, and reduce phytates, which decrease nutrient absorption. Just submerge your nuts in water while the oven is heating up and you'll be good to go.

How do you keep pecan pie crust from sticking to a pie plate? ›

Melted shortening or butter - Brush a thin layer onto the surface of the pie dish so you don't overdo it or end up with patchy spots from an aerosol non-stick spray. Chill the pie pan before you place the pie crust in the pan.

What is the bitter part of a pecan called? ›

Pecan and acorn nuts have two sources of bitterness -- naturally occurring tannins in the kernel and pieces of corky material from the inside of the nut which can adhere to the kernel. Some of the tannin and all of the corky material can be removed by washing the kernels before cooking.

What is the tastiest pecan? ›

You believe the largest pecan is the best pecan? Then I would suggest Jackson, Cherryle, Excel or Ellis to eat. You want a richer flavored pecan? This is typically due to a very high oil content – Elliott, Lipan or a seedling (native) pecan may be best for you.

What kind of ice cream is good with pecan pie? ›

Rich, velvety chocolate ice cream comes to life with a bite of pecan pie. The pecans hold their flavor against the deep chocolate flavor without being overtaken making this the perfect pair!

Is it better to use light or dark Karo syrup for pecan pie? ›

Light and dark corn syrup can be used interchangeably in almost every instance, with slight flavor variances. In a pecan pie, for example, light corn syrup will contribute sweetness and a hint of vanilla, but that's about it. Dark corn syrup, in addition to sweetness, will add color and a more robust, toasty flavor.

Can you rebake a pecan pie that is undercooked? ›

A soupy pecan pie filling can be fixed by covering the crust in foil and popping it back into the oven at around 325 degrees Fahrenheit for approximately 20 to 30 minutes.

You can only keep it at room temperature for two hours. Since pecan pies contain eggs, they have more chances to get bad and make you sick. So, if you have kept your pies in the fridge, put them back within two hours. On the other hand, store-bought pies contain preservatives that keep them from spoiling.

Why is store-bought pecan pie not refrigerated? ›

According to the USDA, any pie that is egg-rich (such as pecan, pumpkin, lemon meringue, and any custard pie) must be kept in the fridge after baking and cooling. The exception here is some store-bought pies, which may contain preservatives that will allow the pies to be left unrefrigerated.

Can dogs eat pecans? ›

These nuts are toxic for dogs. Eating them can result in pets becoming sick and needing immediate veterinary care. “The reason pecans are considered toxic is that they contain a compound called juglone, also found in walnuts, that is harmful to dogs,” advises Dr. Klein.

How do you keep pecans from burning on a pie? ›

How do you not overcook pecan pie? ›

A hard pecan pie means it was cooked too long. Again, bake the pie just until the filling is set and registers 200 degrees on an instant read thermometer. You can also try covering the top of the pie with a piece of aluminum foil for the last 10-15 minutes of the baking time and/or baking the pie on a lower rack.
